Archiving Blogs

So, when I started this blog thing, I thought it'd just be for fun. And it is, but the more I do it, the more it has become a scrapbook/journal thingy and the more I'm beginning to think I want to make sure it exists for awhile.

So, I pose the question to all the bloggers out there who are far more html savvy than me (than I?): How can I save my blog onto a disc, or publish it onto a hard copy or in some way PRESERVE all my hard work in case something bad should happen to Blogger?

I'm already noticing when I go back to link older posts that some of the pictures no longer come up. What's with that?

Anyone know?

Anyone?

Bueller?

HELP!

i've wondered the same thing about backing up my work.

not sure on the photo thing though. mine are all intact, with the few exceptions of when i have linked directly to a photo online instead of actually publishing it to my blog from my hard drive. i noticed that some of those photos have gone up "missing" but that is because the link is no longer live...

i am definitely going to keep an eye on this to see if someone offers you a content back-up solution!

blogger doesn't really support an archive function...

you can clumsily back it up by changing the days to display in the Settings->Formatting to total days you've blogged, view your blog and save the result (.mht format will have pics saved in it, too, but be a large file.)

or check out blogger's solution:
HERE

in the future you can have blogger e-mail you every time you post in the Settings->Email tab

not very helpful, I realize, but about all you can do at this point...

Well, I don't know how well you'd like the result, but just in the interest of saving your words, you could always just copy and paste each entry and save each as its own file on your hard drive. Keep them all in their own folder and it would almost be like a chapter by chapter book, if you get what I'm talking about. Only, if you want to keep them in order, you'd have to name each file 1, 2, 3, etc. Does that make sense?
How are you putting photos on your blog? If you're hotlinking them -- linking directly to their location on another website -- that other server may have gone down or the image may have been deleted.

If you're using photos from your own gallery on another site, like flikr, I don't know why the links wouldn't work.

As a note: if you are hotlinking, you shouldn't. Register on flikr to host your photos - flikr is free. I'm able to upload photos directly onto my blog, but I pay for hosting and use Word Press.

I don't know any shortcuts, but when I decided to go back and archive my blog, I basically did what Jules said, and copied each entry into its own Word document, then dropped them all in their own folder.

Now I actually compose in Word, save it, and copy and paste it into my Blogger compose window. It's an extra step, but I've lost my whole post a couple of times because of Blogger glitches, so it's worth it to me.

If you want them in order, you could name the files by date.

I used to do exactly that, Katrina, but just having the Word doc isn't I guess what I'm after. I kind of think of blogging as a cross between scrapbooking and journalling, so I was hoping there was a way to actually PUBLISH the pages with the format mostly intact (obviously allowing somehow for page margins) so that I could have an actual hard copy. I'll try Ramblin's suggestion (her Blogger link - on how they suggest you archive) and see how that goes. Hopefully I won't lose my whole blog in the process. I'll do some googling and see what else I can come up with. I'll be certain to post any ideas that I find!! I know many of you would want to have a back up copy at the very least!

I'd ask my boss about how he managed to get my whole blog saved in a word file

But that probably won't go over very well.

You can ask him though .... (wink wink)

awhile back one of the blogs i visit mentioned something about a website that would transfer your blog to a journal/book. I'll see if she still has the info...c

I think on the technical blog on my blog (top links) the guy talks about archiving.

Gee, did a librarian write that obtuse sentence?

Hope that helps...
